ECOLOGY : Poem by AKRamanujam

 Summary

The poem 'Ecology' deals with different attitudes of people towards the Nature. An old woman ( poet's mother) doesn't allow the three Champaka trees to be felled (cut down) despite the physical pain she suffers because of the trees. She tolerates the pain but doesn't allow anyone to fell the trees. The poet, on the other hand, wants them to be cut because the presence of trees makes someone suffer ( his concern is his mother's well-being). One wants to save the trees, while the other wants them felled. Here, the man is practical while the woman is emotional.

There are three champaka trees a mile away from the poet's house. Every year during the rainy season these trees are fully covered with flowers. They look beautiful but the problem is the pollen grains that spread all around the trees. Some people are allergic to the pollen grains of these flowers. The poet's mother suffers from migraine (severe headache) every year during the flowering season. So the poet is angry on those trees and wants them felled. Shutting the doors and windows is not a solution to the problem because the old house has holes here and there that the fog of the pollen grains enter the house. The poet compares the old house to human body that has holes like nose, mouth etc. This comparison gives a comic touch.

Whenever the mother hears her son speak of felling the trees; she bursts out and shows her anger. Her anger is compared to a reflection of light from a twisted silver chain and wetting of children's knickers (diapers were not used that time... )

The mother has an emotional attachment with the trees. She says the trees are as old as she is and they are a gift from god. The seeds were dropped by a passing bird through its shit. The flowers are useful for Pooja ( a ritual of worshiping god ) and for women who like to keep them in their hair. She points out a negative aspect of the trees that a few people suffer from headache during the season. She is so strongly attached to the trees that she wants to have the trees even though they cause pain to her.
