On
Children (summary)
The poem on Children has a philosophic tone. It has a
direct message to parents, the dos and don’ts that they have to follow. The
message has far reaching implications on the good health of this ill society.
According to
Khalil Gibran, children belong to their
parents is an illusion. The reality is that they are the children of their
creator, The God. Today, a child has taken birth because his soul wished to be
born. As it was his choice to be born, he should have choice to lead a life.
A child comes
to life, biologically through the parents but not from them. They are only a
medium. So, children are not one’s possessions. They are not parts or puppets,
but individuals with their own thoughts and wishes. Parents should never force
their thoughts on their children.
The poet asks
parents to follow their children if they like, but never to force children to follow them, because
life goes forward and not backwards. They should be allowed to grow and develop
freely. Gibran encourages parents to love their children as much as they please
but not to bind them in any way.
The poet
sees ‘God’ as an archer, parents as his
bow and children as live arrows. God shoots these arrows in to the future. He
has his purpose and plan.
Short summary
The poet says that children do not belong to parents.
Parents should not think that children are their property. Children are born
because their soul wished to be born. They have come through the parents and
not from them.
The poet advises the parents to give love to their
children but not their thoughts. They should be allowed to develop their own
thoughts. Children belong to the future and parents to the past. So, parents
should not drag the children to old ideas and thoughts. Instead, parents can
follow children.
The poet
sees ‘God’ as an archer, parents as his
bow and children as live arrows. God loves both parents and children. He shoots
these arrows in to the future. He has his purpose and plan.
