1st puc Summary of The Farmer's Wife

This is a very simple summary.

This poem focusses on the condition of a woman whose husband, a farmer, commits suicide.

The Farmer takes poison and dies as he was unable to face the creditors. He was in debt and the crop failed. Being a sensitive man, he could not handle the situation,and committed suicide.

The woman expresses her anguish. She says, sarcastically, that he was a virtuous man and hence escaped from the difficult situation, leaving her behind to face the creditors and look after her four children. She condemns his action. She is worried, angry and in deep sorrow. The poison he took actually made her life bitter. She wonders how her husband left her to face what he couldn't.

The woman says she escaped death many times but this is a real death blow to her. Yet she musters courage and chooses to live and face the situation. She says she would teach her children to face all odd in life. She reiterates that she would embrace life not death. She indirectly says that her husband was a coward and she wouldn't let her children to be so.
