When you are old Summary

                                                                When You Are Old

William Butler Yeats loved a beautiful woman called Maud Gonne. It was a one sided love. Yeats was yearning for her love. But she was not responding to his love. He was desperate to convey his deep love for. When she did not care to listen to him, he used a trick to get immediate attention. This is very interesting.
Yeats gives her a book of poems written by him. He tells her to open the book only when she becomes old. This is only to rouse curiosity. He knows the general psyche of the people. So, he knows that she would open the book soon. This is what he wants.
In the poems he has written that his love for her is true and genuine while other men who claim that they love may be infatuation. He warns her that those men would be with her till she is young, happy and charming. They would desert her when she becomes old or she is in sorrow. But, he would stand by her even when she is in sorrow and till his death.

In the Last stanza, the poet personifies his love that would walk away in gloom on to a mountain and hide its face amidst stars. He mans to say that she should recognize his deep and genuine love and reciprocate lest she should repent later.
